BJP React To Modi’s Claim That Congress ‘Callously’ Gave Away Island To Sri Lanka

The recent claim made by Prime Minister Modi regarding the Congress party’s alleged act of giving away the island of Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka has sparked a strong reaction from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in particular, has criticized the Congress for their actions and lack of remorse.

Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his disappointment with the Congress party, stating that they “did not have regrets” after “willingly” giving up Katchatheevu.

“He sarcastically applauded the Congress, saying, “Slow claps for Congress! They willingly gave up Katchatheevu and had no regrets about it either.”

Shah further accused the Congress of speaking against the unity and integrity of India. He highlighted instances where Congress MPs have spoken about dividing the nation and denigrating Indian culture and traditions.

According to Shah, these actions demonstrate the Congress party’s intentions to divide or break the nation.

BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi also criticized the Congress and the DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) for their silence on the issue of Katchatheevu.

He reminded the nation that Katchatheevu belonged to India until 1974 and is located just 25 kilometers from the Indian coast in Tamil Nadu.

Trivedi pointed out that during the reign of Indira Gandhi, the then government handed over Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka.

As part of the agreement, Indian fishermen were prohibited from accessing the island. This decision has resulted in numerous Indian fishermen being caught, imprisoned, and subjected to atrocities by the Sri Lankan authorities.

Trivedi criticized both the DMK and the Congress for failing to raise the issue and advocate for the rights of Indian fishermen. He emphasized the importance of addressing the concerns and hardships faced by Indian fishermen due to the loss of access to Katchatheevu.

Katchatheevu holds historical and strategic importance for India. It has been a traditional fishing ground for Indian fishermen for centuries. The loss of access to this island has had a significant impact on the livelihoods of Indian fishermen, who depend on these waters for their sustenance.

The BJP’s criticism of the Congress and the DMK stems from their belief that these parties have failed to prioritize the interests of Indian fishermen and protect India’s territorial integrity.
