Sony Pictures Classics has acquired the rights to A Winter’s Journey, an animated film that will be created in part with the PlayStation game-creation tool Dreams. According to Deadline, the film will feature live actors as well as CG and hand-painted animation.

It will be based on Franz Schubert’s Winterreise, a collection of 24 songs for voice and piano. It tells the story of a lovelorn poet who sets out on a perilous journey through mountains and snow in 1812 Bavaria.
Dreams was originally developed for the PlayStation 4 by Media Molecule, the studio behind LittleBigPlanet. From the beginning, the studio pitched it as a way to create “art, movies, and video games,” and we once described it as “an engine, learning suite, and distribution platform rolled into one.”
People have used it since then to make their own games, realistic renderings of nature, and immersive experiences of their favorite movies, among other things. A Winter’s Journey, on the other hand, is said to be the first time Dreams has been used in a feature film.
It is not immediately clear when Sony will release the film, but production is set to begin in June in Wrocaw, Poland, with actors including John Malkovich and Jason Isaacs.

It will most likely take some time before it is ready for release. Dreams is currently available for $10 in the US PlayStation Store, and it includes a rotating list of the most creative games created with the tool.
