Indian cricket team head coach Rahul Dravid has expressed his support for an “all-round review” of the domestic cricket scheduling in response to concerns raised by players Shardul Thakur and R Sai Kishore.

Both players emphasized the need for more breaks between matches to prevent injuries. Dravid believes that it is crucial for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to consult the players who are “going through the grind and putting their bodies on the line.”

During a post-match interview after India’s victory over England in the fifth Test match in Dharamsala, Dravid acknowledged the comments made by Shardul Thakur and other players about the challenging nature of the domestic cricket schedule.

He highlighted the demanding nature of cricket in India, particularly due to the extensive travel involved. Dravid emphasized the importance of listening to the players, as they are the ones directly experiencing the physical toll of the game.

Rahul Dravid firmly believes that if multiple players express concerns about the scheduling, then it is necessary to reevaluate and find ways to manage the workload effectively.

He urged the BCCI to examine the scheduling of other competitions like the Duleep Trophy and Deodhar Trophy, which add additional pressure on cricketers.

“It’s a long season already in India. It’s tough,” Dravid stated. He highlighted the extended duration of the Ranji Trophy and pointed out that the Duleep Trophy often begins just a month after the Indian Premier League (IPL).

This puts additional strain on the players who are vying for selection in the national team. These players end up playing an excessive amount of cricket, as they are often selected for the next level and their teams frequently reach the semi-finals and finals of various tournaments.

Dravid emphasized the need to strike a balance between players’ participation in domestic cricket and their representation of India at the international level. He stressed that the workload can become overwhelming for these individuals, given the additional commitments of India A tours.

Dravid suggested that it may be necessary to reassess the relevance and necessity of certain tournaments in the current cricketing landscape.

“Maybe we need to re-look and see whether some of the tournaments that we are conducting are necessary in this day and age or if they are not necessary. There needs to be an all-round review [involving] coaches and players, especially the guys who are part of the domestic circuit,” Dravid concluded.

Rahul Dravid’s stance on the domestic cricket scheduling issue highlights his commitment to the well-being and long-term development of Indian cricketers. As the head coach, he recognizes the challenges faced by players and the need for a comprehensive evaluation of the current system.

By advocating for a player-centric approach, Dravid is aiming to strike a balance that allows cricketers to perform at their best while also ensuring their physical and mental health is prioritized.

The BCCI should take Dravid’s suggestions seriously and initiate a collaborative process involving players, coaches, and administrators to address the concerns raised. Such a review would not only benefit the players but also contribute to the overall growth and success of Indian cricket.
