Odisha BJP Chief, Manmohan Samal, has stated that there were no discussions about forming an alliance with Naveen Patnaik’s Biju Janata Dal (BJD) during a recent party meeting on poll preparation.

This comes amidst speculation that the ruling BJD could rekindle ties with the BJP. Samal clarified that the meeting focused on election preparations and strategies for the upcoming polls.

Samal emphasized, “The election preparation meeting was held with our senior leaders, and we went to Delhi for that purpose. However, no discussions were held regarding an alliance. Our focus was on how we will stand in the upcoming elections.”

He further added, “The BJP will contest the Parliament and Vidhan Sabha (state assembly) elections independently. Our discussions revolved around how we will form the government in the state as well as at the center.”

The BJD and the BJP had a political partnership for 11 years until 2009 when the BJD decided to leave the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) due to failed seat-sharing talks.

In the 2019 elections, the BJP won eight parliamentary constituencies and 23 assembly seats, while the BJD secured 12 parliamentary constituencies and 112 assembly seats.

It is worth noting that both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Naveen Patnaik have publicly praised each other on multiple occasions.

Most recently, during Modi’s visit to Odisha on March 5th, he launched various developmental projects worth over Rs 19,600 crore in Jaipur district. These gestures have sparked speculation about the possibility of a renewed alliance between the two parties.

However, Samal’s statement clarifies that the BJP is focused on contesting the upcoming elections independently. The party aims to strengthen its presence both in the state assembly and the central government.

While there may be mutual admiration between the leaders, the BJP is determined to establish itself as a strong political force in Odisha. The upcoming elections in Odisha will be closely watched as political dynamics continue to evolve.

The BJP’s performance in the previous elections showcased its growing influence in the state, while the BJD’s consistent hold on power demonstrated its strong support base. As the parties gear up for the next round of elections, it remains to be seen how the political landscape in Odisha will unfold.
