A 30-year-old man from Hyderabad, Mohammed Asfan, tragically lost his life while fighting in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

Asfan, who was allegedly deceived into joining the Russian Army through a job fraud, had become a victim of a scam that targeted vulnerable individuals seeking employment opportunities.

Upon learning about their son’s untimely demise, Asfan’s family sought assistance from AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP, Asaduddin Owaisi, in repatriating his body.

AIMIM reached out to the Indian Embassy in Moscow, which confirmed the unfortunate news of Asfan’s death. The embassy assured the family that they would make every effort to bring his mortal remains back to India.

Asfan leaves behind his wife and two children, who are now left to cope with the devastating loss. The Indian Embassy in Moscow expressed their condolences and pledged support to the grieving family.

Similar incidents have been reported in recent weeks, shedding light on the plight of Indian individuals who have been deceived into working as “helpers” for the Russian Army during the conflict with Ukraine.

One such case involved a 23-year-old man from Gujarat, Hamil Mangukiya, who responded to an online job advertisement and ended up being recruited as an assistant in the Russian Army. Tragically, Mangukiya lost his life in an airstrike by Ukraine on February 21 in the Donetsk region.

These cases highlight the alarming trend of deceptive agents preying on vulnerable individuals seeking employment opportunities abroad. These agents mislead unsuspecting victims, promising them jobs as support staff for the Russian Army.

However, instead of fulfilling their promised roles, these individuals find themselves embroiled in the conflict and forced to fight alongside Ukrainian soldiers in border areas.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has acknowledged the situation and assured that the Indian government is actively working towards the safe return of these Indian nationals.

The MEA spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, stated during a press conference in February that efforts are being made to secure the “early discharge” of the Indian individuals working as support staff or helpers for the Russian Army.

With approximately 20 Indians currently in this situation, the Indian government is in regular communication with Russian authorities in both New Delhi and Moscow to ensure their safe return.

The MEA is committed to resolving this issue and preventing further exploitation of Indian nationals who have been deceived into joining the conflict.

These unfortunate incidents serve as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with job fraud and the need for individuals to be cautious when seeking employment opportunities abroad.

It is essential for aspiring job seekers to thoroughly research and verify the legitimacy of job offers to avoid falling victim to scams that can have tragic consequences.

The loss of Mohammed Asfan and other victims of job fraud is a tragic reminder of the importance of protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation.

The Indian government, in collaboration with international partners, must continue to strengthen efforts to combat job fraud and ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens seeking employment opportunities abroad.
