WhatsApp has finally introduced one-on-one voice and video calling on its desktop app for Windows and Mac. The messaging service only had the feature on its mobile app until late last year, when it decided to test the feature by rolling it out to a few desktop users.

When it was still being tested, approved users saw the call and video chat icons marked “Beta” in the chat header, but that is no longer the case as the feature is now officially available on desktop, everyone can use it.

While announcing the rollout of the feature, WhatsApp said it has seen “significant increases in people calling one another on WhatsApp, often for long conversations” over the past year. But we aren’t surprised because the pandemic pushed too many people to video calling.

WhatsApp also said, “With so many people still apart from their loved ones, and adjusting to new ways of working, we want conversations on WhatsApp to feel as close to in-person as possible, regardless of where you are in the world or the tech you’re using.”

The new update will allow users to see their loved ones more clearly since it’s on a large screen, and it’ll free up their hands so they can move around or do other things in the middle of conversations because it’s on a desktop.

For now, you cannot make group video calls on WhatsApp desktop, but the Facebook-owned company said group video calling will be possible on desktop in the future.
