The BJP on Sunday said it welcomed the resignation of Maharashtra minister Sanjay Rathod after it was discovered that his name is being linked to the death of a woman in Pune.

The minister submitted his resignation letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray earlier on Sunday, Feb. 28.

Sanjay Rathod who holds the forest portfolio was dealing with allegations of complicity in the death of Puja Chavan (23), a resident of Beed district, who was unfortunately found dead in Pune on February 8 after reportedly falling off from the building where she lived before her death.

Speaking about Rathod’s resignation, state BJP chief Chandrakant Patil said, “It was due to the constant pressure of the people of Maharashtra and the workers of the BJP that the chief minister had to ultimately yield,” while adding that he was glad the chief minister took the courageous step of removing Rathod from the cabinet.

He also said he hoped the NCP chief Sharad Pawar would also make a similar move regarding another minister Dhananjay Munde who was accused of rape by a Mumbai-based woman. Though the woman later withdrew her complaint.

This comes as Patil on Saturday said the BJP will not allow the budget session of the state legislature, which is suppose to begin on Monday to run smoothly if the CM does not remove Rathod from the cabinet by Monday.

The BJP leader, however, called on the police to make sure that the woman’s family is given justice in the matter.
